With the ongoing increase in complexity of web communications, we must ensure the ongoing need for policies and workflows to manage web communications effectively and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>This document outlines the strategic priorities, policies, and procedures of campbell.edu. If you have questions regarding this document, please contact\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campbell.edu\/university-communications\/\">University Communications &amp; Marketing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Web Strategic\u00a0Priorities<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support the university\u2019s mission by focusing efforts on the following key areas: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brand awareness and perception<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student enrollment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving donations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expand Campbell\u2019s reach by creating an <a href=\"https:\/\/brand.campbell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on-brand<\/a> website with consistent design, flexible features, and marketing-driven content to reach our No. 1 target audience: prospective students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuously improve the usability and accessibility of our website by ensuring:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User-oriented content that is current<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logical content structure<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-site structure and navigation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information architecture of content<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile accessibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">508 compliance for those with disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce website bloat and content redundancy with an improved information architecture, thoughtful navigation, and regular maintenance process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a common Content Management System and code base across all schools and departments for efficiency and cost control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guarantee stability and effectiveness of the website by resolving technology issues and performing regular maintenance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure implementations follow web standards, accessibility, and usability best practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Strategic Standardization<\/h2>\n<p>University Communications &amp; Marketing must approve, create, and develop all official University websites using the branded templates provided.<\/p>\n<p>Major revisions to the website \u2013 including but not limited to site structure, code, design, components, and functionality \u2013 require the approval of University Communications &amp; Marketing.<\/p>\n<p>The strategic priorities of the University, brand integrity, site performance, security, and site-wide code base will be considered before these types of requests can be approved.<\/p>\n<p>If schools and departments want to create a new website, start a blog, add additional pages to an existing website, or request new features that require development work or third-party software, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cuweb.wufoo.com\/forms\/z1ly8bcq1hbetcx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Web Request<\/a> must be submitted to University Communications &amp; Marketing.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External Websites for Official University Use<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External websites or blogs (sites hosted outside of the campbell.edu domain) to be used for official University business, including those created for marketing campaigns, will not be permitted. Please direct all inquiries to University Communications &amp; Marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third-Party Software Implementation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third-party extensions expand the capability of the core CMS; however, quality of extensions and compatibility with other add-ons to the CMS are not guaranteed. If not well managed, use of third-party extensions can easily lead to problems in reliability, regression errors in updates, managing the differences between sites that do and don\u2019t use them, testing them, and ensuring a consistent and quality experience for users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons, University Communications &amp; Marketing must vet and approve all plugins and third-party applications prior to purchases being made by schools or departments. University Communications &amp; Marketing reserves the right to deny requests in order to maintain and protect the technical integrity of the official University website.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code Governance<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Marketing &amp; Third-Party Advertising<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accumulation of digital marketing vendor tags on web pages can impact site performance in a number of ways, including poor tag design, slow response time associated with the collection servers, tag placement, and the number of tags accumulated on pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requests for third-party code inclusion must be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reviewed by University Communications &amp; Marketing before inclusion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applied in a standardized manner by University Communications &amp; Marketing staff.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CMS-Incorporated Standards<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great many of the technical issues associated with proper website design is implemented as part of the Content Management System, and thus will not be at the discretion of the content manager. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitemap implementation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">URL structure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coding style<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Browser compatibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many code aspects of SEO<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual identity and style<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most aspects of layout format and elements<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All official University websites should use a campbell.edu website address.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All campbell.edu websites must use the official header and footer. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Websites on the campbell.edu domain must follow <a href=\"https:\/\/brand.campbell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brand guidelines<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Content Policy<\/h2>\n<p>Campbell.edu is user-first. It exists to deliver content that users need to complete an action or be informed.<\/p>\n<h3>Writing for the Web<\/h3>\n<p>Please <a href=\"https:\/\/campbell.helpdocs.com\/best-practices\/tips-writing-for-the-web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see our tips and best practices<\/a>\u00a0on writing for the web.<\/p>\n<h3>Prohibited Content\u00a0Topics<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Advertising non-university entities, businesses, organizations or products.<\/li>\n<li>Content that implies institutional endorsement of entities, businesses, organizations, products, projects or services.<\/li>\n<li>Content that is inconsistent with the University\u2019s mission.<\/li>\n<li>Links to pages that are inconsistent with the University\u2019s mission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multimedia Policies<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Images<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to copyright laws, images on campbell.edu must be original content or considered public domain (free from copyright). Publishing an image that you do not own could result in legal action. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep it professional. Ensure images are reflective of an institution of higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include alt tags (for accessibility and search engine optimization). An alt tag is text associated with an image. It is not seen by the user, but is readable by search engines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directory Photos<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.campbell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online directory<\/a> includes official headshots of Campbell faculty and staff. It is important that all images in the\u00a0directory are recent (preferably within the past five years), high resolution\u00a0and maintain a consistent look.\u00a0Headshots can be scheduled via the <a href=\"https:\/\/cuweb.wufoo.com\/forms\/request-a-photographer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online form<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphic content across campbell.edu \u2013 including graphics, advertisements, illustrations, infographics, or other artwork \u2013 must follow University <a href=\"https:\/\/brand.campbell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brand guidelines<\/a>, be properly formatted, and meet accessibility compliance. Graphic content that does not adhere to these policies is subject to removal from the website.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third-Party Logos<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of third-party logos on the University website must be approved by University Communications &amp; Marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Videos uploaded to the university website or University social media platforms must follow University <a href=\"https:\/\/brand.campbell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brand guidelines<\/a>, be properly formatted, and meet accessibility compliance. Videos that do not adhere to these policies are subject to removal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Videos uploaded to the University website or social media platforms are the sole responsibility of the video owner and should continue to be stored and backed up by the video owner.
